What are Local Health Involvement Groups or LHIGs?
Local Health Involvement Groups or “LHIGs” are made up of citizens who care about health and health services. They are established to explore and provide advice to the Board of Northern Health Region on issues that impact the delivery of local health services.
There are 4 permanent Local Health Involvement Groups in the Northern Health Region. These 4 are based on geography, demographics and culture. Each LHIG will have a minimum of 10 members. In addition to the 4 permanent groups a virtual LHIG will also be established. The virtual LHIG will have at least 10 members, but can be limited only by the number of citizens in the Region. They are:
- Flin Flon/The Pas and Area
- Thompson and Area
- Northern Communities
- Youth (made up of young people aged 12 to 24)
In addition to the above, an on-line, virtual LHIG will be set up to address specific issues of interest and in keeping with the purpose of LHIG.
Who can apply to be a member of a Local Health Involvement Group?
Anyone who lives within the service area of the Northern Health Region can apply to be a member of a LHIG with the exception of anyone who is currently employed by the Northern Health Region or directly associated with the Northern Health Region such as, Diagnostic Services Manitoba (DSM) or ARAMARK

How are members selected?
Community members apply for membership to Board Chair of the Northern Health Region. LHIG Members are appointed by the Board of the Northern Health Region, ensuring that diverse geography and points of view are represented in each LHIG. Citizens who are selected to be a member of a LHIG should:
- have a passion for health and a desire to help improve the health system.
- like to think about the “Big Picture”, and can think about the needs of others
- be good listeners
- be comfortable sharing ideas in a group
Are LHIG members paid?
No. LHIG members are volunteers and are not paid for their participation. We encourage everyone to apply. Efforts will be made to accommodate specific requirements.
What is the commitment to being a member of a LHIG?
- Terms of LHIGs will be 3 years with an opportunity for one re-appointment for a maximum of 6 years of service. Appointments will be made in such a way as to have an organized rotation of members providing for renewal while maintaining continuity. The first members to each group will be appointed for 1, 2, or 3 year terms to establish a rotational pattern. All subsequent appointments will be for 3 years.
- At least one face to face meeting per year that will directly coincide with our annual Northern Health Summit, occurring the day prior. A minimum of 3 other meetings per year with allowances for Telehealth, teleconference and audio-visual (web-based) communication as required.
- The Regional Youth LHIG will meet face to face to directly coincide with the annual Youth Forum.
- A Chair of the virtual LHIG will be appointed by the Board to provide continuity. The term of the Chair will align with the parameters of the virtual LHIG.The size of the LHIG will be determined by the issue and interest in that issue, at the call of the virtual LHIG Chair, in consultation with the Board Chair.
- Terms of virtual LHIGs will be determined by the LHIG in consultation with the Board Chair but shall not exceed two years.
- The number of virtual meetings will be determined by the virtual LHIG Chair and take into consideration the specifics of the issue under discussion.
What will the Region do with my feedback?
A report of the discussions that occurred within the regional LHIGs will be presented to the Northern Health Region Board of Directors and will become part of the considerations in decision making. The Board will communicate with the LHIGs about how their feedback helped their deliberations and decision making.
