What is Palliative Care?
Palliative Care is Health Care provided to people at any age who are living with a life-limiting or terminal illness.
Palliative Care is committed to caring for individuals and their loved ones with a life limiting illness to maintain or improve the quality of life from the time of diagnosis through treatment, until the end of life and into the bereavement period. The philosophy encourages living life until death with dignity and comfort through physical, emotional and spiritual support for individuals in their home, in hospital or in the Long Term Care Facility.
The Northern Health Region offers a Palliative Care Program, accessible through community-based Palliative Care Nurses. They may become part of your multidisciplinary care team to offer:
- Emotional & spiritual support
- Planning with loved ones for a team approach to care
- Continuity of care between care settings
- Consultation for pain and symptom control
- Assistance in health care planning (Advance Care Plan & Health Care Directive)
- Access to Palliative Care Drug Access Program, offered by Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)
Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is available throughout Manitoba and is coordinated provincially by Shared Health. A provincial medical assistance in dying team is available to help patients access this service. Patients may speak with their health care provider or local health authority or directly contact the provincial MAiD team regarding accessing medical assistance in dying in their region.
