Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)

The Northern Health Region’s Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) program supports all departments across facilities throughout the region. The program works collaboratively with nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, patients, clients, visitors, and volunteers to promote education, reduce risk, and help prevent the spread of infections.

The IP&C team provides guidance and support to hospitals, long-term care facilities, community health services, and partner organizations across the Northern Health Region.

IP&C practitioners are based in Flin Flon, The Pas, and Thompson and are available Monday to Friday. The team is also available for consultation and support to surrounding facilities and outlying communities across the region.

Key roles of the NRHA IP&C Program include:

  • Developing regional infection prevention and control policies and practices to support safe, high-quality care
  • Monitoring and responding to health-care–associated infections to reduce transmission
  • Providing education and consultation to staff, patients, residents, clients, families, and visitors on infection prevention best practices

Your Role in Infection Prevention

Patients, clients, residents, families, and visitors all play an important role in preventing the spread of infection. You can help by:

  • Practicing regular hand hygiene
  • Encouraging health-care staff and visitors to clean their hands
  • Following proper respiratory etiquette
  • Wearing personal protective equipment when directed

By taking these steps, you help protect yourself, others, and the communities we serve.
